As of 2013, Halle remains the only African-American actress to have been awarded an Oscar for a leading role, which she won for her role in the film Monster’s Ball in 2002.

Prior to her career as an actress, she entered a number of beauty pageants, emerging as the 1st runner-up in the well-known Miss USA Pageant in 1986.

In 1992, she made her breakthrough appearance on film in the film Boomerang. This led to her landing parts in the 1994 film The Flintstones and the 1998 film Bulworth.
